Australian banks warns of fake news article claiming cryptocurrency partnership

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (ASX:CBA) (CBA) said a news article that claimed the bank partnered with a cryptocurrency trading platform and encouraged people to invest in crypto assets was fake.

The article was being spread across social media, with the CBA adding it is “totally false and untrue,” according to Reuters.

Social media sites such as Facebook have received a request to remove the article, as well as the issue being reported to the relevant authorities.

Australian citizens have been advised through the CBA’s communication channels not to respond or click through to the website should they receive the fake story.

CBA also claimed the article was used as a way to entice people to a site where they would provide the scammer with their personal and bank details.

Last year,  the CBA became the first main-street bank to offer a platform for retail customers to trade cryptocurrencies.
