Chatham-Kent LTC home receives funding for hiring spree

A Chatham-Kent long-term care home will receive provincial funding to hire more staff in an effort to increase the quality of resident care.

Riverview Gardens in Chatham is expected to hire approximately 40 new staff members to provide direct nursing care and support education and training for staff.

The long-term care home will receive as much as $959,185 by March 31, 2022, to cover the additional wages.

The funding is part of Ontario’s plan to hire more workers in the sector so the province can meet a goal of getting long-term care residents an average of four hours of direct care per day by 2025.

“The requirement is being built into the legislation and has come about as a result of the spotlight shone on long-term care throughout the pandemic,” read the report.

According to the report, Riverview Gardens currently provides up to 2.75 hours of care per resident per day.  In order to hire 40 new employees, the home is proposing a temporary two-year contract position be hired.

“Riverview Gardens will focus on attracting talent in a sector that has a shortage of health care workers nationwide,” the report read.

The funding can only be used for direct care to the home’s residents. It cannot be used for administrative support including supervision, recruitment activities, or resource costs such as software licencing.

Municipal staff will be bringing the software resource costs and a request for an additional manager to the 2020 budget meeting slated for January 12, 2022.
