Cowboys agree to NFL’s first cryptocurrency partnership

The Dallas Cowboys agreed to the NFL’s first cryptocurrency partnership after making an agreement with Blockchain.com, according to an April 13 press release and conference. The $14 billion global crypto website will become an “exclusive digital asset partner” of the team, the press release said.

The agreement will include extensive branding and marketing, including club space and visible signage within the stadium, the release said. The partnership will also include event opportunities, such as VIP away games and player-hosted events, according to the release.

“[It’s] significant times for us and significant times for the NFL, as well,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in the press conference. “I wanted the Dallas Cowboys to be a future part of [cryptocurrency] in any and every way we could.”

Fans will not be able to use cryptocurrency at games “at this time,” Jones said, nor will the Cowboys be able to pay their players using the currency, but he said he is “optimistic” both will be possible in the future.

Blockchain.com CEO Peter Smith said this deal with the Cowboys is the company’s first partnership with a national professional sports team. In the release, Smith said he is “incredibly honored” to join forces with the world’s most valuable sports team.

“We chose to partner with the Cowboys because they represent the most trusted brand in professional sports, they compete with a champion mindset and believe in long-term partnerships,” Smith said in the release.

Blockchain.com began exploring the partnership with the Cowboys about a year ago, Smith said during the press conference. When asked whether fans could expect to see a “Blockchain.com Stadium” similar to Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, Smith said the company doesn’t plan to do any stadium deals.

“For me the game is inside the stadium. I care a lot about what fans see when they’re inside the stadium,” Smith said.
