Crypto Adoption trends in South Africa and world in 2022: Finder’s cryptocurrency adoption index

The recent cryptocurrency adoption index published by Finder on January 11 has unveiled some important facts about the growth of cryptocurrencies worldwide through an ongoing survey of internet users in 27 countries. The survey highlights facts for December 2021. Globally, Vietnam topped the list of cryptocurrency ownership in the world at 28.6 percent, followed immediately by India at 23.4 percent and Australia at 22.9 percent. On the other hand, Germany, UK and Japan featured among countries having the lowest cryptocurrency ownership at 7.7 percent, 6.1 percent and 5.8 percent respectively. The crypto global adoption rate hiked to 15.5 percent in December 2021 from 11.2 percent in October 2021.
The survey has highlighted the crypto adoption trends of primarily South Africa, which ranked 21 out of 27 countries. 2003 internet users of the country were surveyed for this purpose and the following statistics surfaced about the the various facets of cryptocurrency adoption in South Africa:
Cryptocurrency adoption rate in the world and South Africa
*The overall crypto ownership rate in South Africa is 11.3 percent, leaving behind the United States at 10.5 percent and Sweden at 9.8 percent.
* Among the popular cryptocurrencies owned in South Africa are Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Ripple and Dogecoin:
– Bitcoin is the most popular in South Africa with 56 percent of the crypto owners owning the coin, placing South Africa at 2nd position in global Bitcoin ownership after Australia at 72.7 percent.
– The second most popular crypto is Ethereum at 31.51 percent, followed by Ripple at 25.8 percent.
– Dogecoin is owned by 15.6 percent, while Solana is held by 12.3 percent of the respondents.
– Globally, Singapore had the highest ownership of Ethereum at 43.5 percent, the US held highest Dogecoin ownership at 31.6 percent, Indonesia led in Solana adoption at 24.9 percent and Japan had highest Ripple ownership at 31.5 percent.
Crypto adoption by gender and age in world and South Africa:
* Globally, men are 2.8 times more likely than women to own cryptocurrency.
* Globally, men are on an average 1.5 times more likely to hold crypto than women and 59 percent men held crypto ownership against 41 percent women in December 2021.
* Men in South Africa are 1.6 times more likely than women to own cryptocurrency.
– About 14.1 percent of men in South Africa said they held crypto compared to 8.5 percent women.
– Among crypto owners, 62 percent are men in contrast to 38 percent women, making the country the 8th-highest male-dominated crypto market of the countries surveyed.
* Crypto ownership according to age in South Africa and world :
– Globally, crypto ownership is dominated by those in the age group of 18 to 34, who comprise 56.1 percent of crypto owners
– In South Africa as well, those between 18 to 34 years dominate crypto ownership at 48.7 percent, while 32 percent ownership is held by 35-54 year olds and those above 55 years hold the least at 19.3 percent.
Cryptocurrency awareness in South Africa:
* Finder surveyed internet users of 23 countries in November 2021 for knowing this parameter.
* South Africa ranked 8 out of 23 countries in crypto awareness.
* 66 percent of the respondents said that they have heard about cryptocurrencies.
* South Africa ranked 10th in optimism about crypto, with 47 percent of the respondents believing crypto to be a good investment option, higher than the global average of 43 percent.
