Philip Hobbs says Defi Du Seuil will bid for a second victory in the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown after not finding anything wrong with the seven-time Grade 1 winner following his disappointing comeback in the 1965 Chase last month.
The JP McManus-owned eight-year-old was fourth of five at Ascot, beaten 35 lengths by Lostintranslation over two miles and five furlongs, but is now set to drop back to two miles for Saturday’s Grade 1, a race he won by a neck from Un De Sceaux in 2019.

At that time, Defi Du Seuil was the rising star of the division and having followed up in the Clarence House Chase, he was sent off 2-5 favourite for the 2020 Champion Chase.
However, he could only finish fourth that day behind Politologue and nothing has gone to plan in his three starts since having been pulled up in last year’s Shloer Chase and then only managing fifth in his defence of the Clarence House in January.
He is now braced to lock horns with the Willie Mullins-trained Chacun Pour Soi, Shloer Chase winner Nube Negra and Celebration Chase scorer Greaneteen among others on Saturday.
Hobbs, who also won the Tingle Creek with Flagship Uberalles in 2001, is encouraged by the prospect of some rain around Sandown before the weekend action and said: “He seems in good form and I would think at the moment we’d be planning to run.
“It was below form you’d have to say [at Ascot] although we haven’t found anything wrong with him. I’ve been very happy with him since.
“He’s always had plenty of pace so I don’t think coming back to two miles is a problem but at the same time, the opposition might be.”
Defi Du Seuil is a best-priced 28-1 with BetVictor to add a second Tingle Creek to his glittering list of accolades, with Chacun Pour Soi the 13-8 favourite ahead of Nube Negra (15-8).
