Square Enix has released its financial results for the first half of its fiscal year ending March 31, 2022 (“1H FY2022/3”). The company booked net sales of ¥168.9 billion ($1.46 billion USD), which is down ¥3.8 billion ($32.9 million USD) year over year; operating income of ¥29.1 billion ($252 million USD), which is down ¥2.5 billion ($21.6 million USD) year over year; and ordinary income of ¥31.4 billion ($268 million USD), which is up ¥900 million ($7.8 million USD) year over year. As expected, a lot of the data is pretty “inside baseball,” but the Square Enix financial results also revealed that NEO: The World Ends with You (NEO TWEWY) sales fell below the company’s expectations.
Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda stated, “While NEO: The World Ends with You was well received by users, it has underperformed our initial expectations.” Weak sales of NEO TWEWY had long been suspected after the game’s subdued debut in Japan back in July, and now we have the unfortunate confirmation. Granted, some fans are quick to argue that Square Enix just didn’t advertise NEO enough leading up to its release, but it’s also true that The World Ends with You is a relatively niche franchise in the first place. So, the real explanation for underperforming NEO TWEWY sales is probably a mix of different factors.
