Scammers asking for Bitcoin target Hillsdale County, police warn

HILLSDALE COUNTY, MI — Residents of Hillsdale County have recently become the target of cryptocurrency scammers, according to police.

In the past couple of weeks, several citizens have received phone calls stating they have a warrant out for their arrest, and they need to purchase Bitcoin to resolve that warrant, according to the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office.

Citizens targeted in these attempted scams have said the callers used names such as Sgt. Johnson and/or Sgt. Green, claiming to be from local law enforcement agencies in Hillsdale, police said.

Several of these scam calls have been made using the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office phone number of (517) 437-7317. These calls are using a spoofed number and are not from the actual sheriff’s office, police said.

The sheriff’s office wants to remind residents that it will never contact citizens telling them they have warrants, or ask for payment over the phone.

Police are urging local residents to not fall for this scam.
