COVID-19: Ontario reports 1,188 COVID hospitalizations, 11 more deaths

York Region hospitalizations spike to 42, outbreaks to 16; New outbreaks declared at 3 Newmarket facilities — Newmarket Health Centre, Southlake Village, Renoir Retirement Residence

On April 9, Public Health Ontario is reporting 1,188 COVID-positive patients in hospital and 140 people in intensive care units with COVID.

There are 168 patients in ICU with COVID-related illness, but 28 of those individuals are no longer testing positive for COVID.

Public Health Ontario is also reporting 10 new deaths that occurred in the past month. There is also one additional death that has been added to the cumulative total based on data cleaning.

There are also 3,797 new COVID cases, although new case counts are underestimated as testing is limited. 

York Region Public Health reports a jump in hospitalizations to 42, with three cases in ICU, and six new admissions on April 6.

York Region is also reporting five open and one closed institutional outbreaks for April 8. Currently, York Region has 16 open institutional outbreaks.

Three new outbreaks have been declared in Newmarket: Newmarket Health Centre LTC (Outbreak #4); Southlake Residential Care Village LTC (Outbreak #7); and The Renoir Retirement Residence (Outbreak #4).

Outbreaks have also been declared at Delmanor – Elgin Mills Retirement Centre (Outbreak #5), Richmond Hill and Union Villa LTC (Outbreak #8), Markham.

The April 9 updates provided by the province’s public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

Cases

  • 2,300 recoveries and 10 deaths since yesterday’s report. 
  • Among the new cases confirmed today are 2,286 unvaccinated people, 423 partially vaccinated people, and 937 fully vaccinated people. 
  • Lab-confirmed testing is mostly limited to Indigenous people, hospitalized people, and those who live or work in high-risk congregate care settings. As such a majority of the people being tested are fully vaccinated as per provincial or workplace mandatory vaccine policies.

Hospitalizations

  • 1,188 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19. Of those, 45 per cent were hospitalized because of COVID-19 and the other 55 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID. 
  • There are 168 patients in Ontario ICUs with COVID. Of those, 64 per cent were admitted because of COVID-19 and the other 36 per cent were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for COVID.
  • There are 76 COVID patients on ventilators.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,192,437 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and reported 1,149,833 recoveries and 12,548 deaths.
