Ontario adds new LTC restrictions

Long-term care home residents will face new restrictions on day absences, general visitors as of Dec. 30.

THUNDER BAY – Ontario’s provincial government is putting new COVID-19 measures in place for long-term care homes, restricting visits and absences.

The new rules will bar residents from taking day absences for social purposes, and general visitors from entering LTC homes. Designated caregivers will still be able to access the facilities.

The measures go into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.

“We know that long-term care residents face an increased risk of COVID-19,” said Minister of Long-Term Care Rod Phillips in a statement released Tuesday. “Given the high community infection rates we’re seeing with the Omicron variant, the time for more action is now.”

The steps were taken in consultation with chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore, the government said.

“We know these measures are difficult for residents and families, but we must stand strong to protect our most vulnerable, which includes residents of long-term care homes,” he stated. “I encourage everyone to get their booster shot as soon as possible so we can keep everyone safe with the added layer of protection that the vaccine provides.”

The new rules follow others put in place earlier this month that required general visitors to be fully vaccinated.
